Grumbles from the Gearbox
Dear Prime Minister, we need Help - Please

Open Letter to the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer
Dear Prime Minister,
I am writing to you today as a driving instructor. I am the membership secretary of a national group of instructors, The AADI and the founder of a local group, HABIT, on the southeast coast.
I want to bring to your attention the increasingly desperate situation my industry faces due to the nationwide surge in fuel prices.
I was recently speaking with a colleague currently in Italy who informed me that the Italian government has moved to cut the duty on diesel by 20c and on unleaded by 5c to protect its citizens from the Middle Eastern energy shock. This is part of a much wider trend across Europe. As of today, May 1st, the governments of Germany, Sweden, Poland, Portugal, the Netherlands, Ireland, Spain and Norway have all implemented significant tax relief and excise duty packages to help their people. May we please have some help too?
Unlike many businesses that can reduce travel to save on costs, my vehicle is my office, and fuel is my primary raw material. I have no choice but to be on the road for many hours a week. The UK government's current stance, which offers no comparable intervention, feels completely disconnected from the reality of my balance sheet. Every penny increase at the pump is a direct hit to my livelihood.
While I try to absorb these costs, I am reaching the point where I must pass them on to my students. I am partly retired, so not as badly affected by colleagues, many with young families and large mortgages, who spend many more hours on the road, and are suffering to a far, far greater degree than I.
Our learners are often young people or workers trying to improve their job prospects. They are already struggling with the cost of living and higher lesson prices, and this will only serve to lock them out of the mobility they need to contribute to the economy. These are the nurses, doctors, teachers, apprentices, builders, etc., that we so desperately need to help our economy to grow.
The Treasury is currently benefiting hugely from higher VAT receipts as pump prices climb. I am asking you and the Chancellor to consider our plight. If our neighbours in Italy, Germany, Spain, etc., can find the fiscal headroom to protect their small businesses and workers, the UK government must do the same.
Alongside us, there are thousands of other companies that rely on transportation to deliver their goods and services across our country, from manufacturers, producers, farmers, and food suppliers, to the local delivery drivers and taxis. Please, we desperately need your help.
I look forward to your response and to hearing what actions you will take to support us all in this moment of crisis, as we rely on our vehicles to work and provide our services across the country.
Yours sincerely,
D. J. Harris ADI # 86323
